Chipmunks by Shabnam M.

Chipmunks are cute animals! If you like tiny little animals, you'll love these little critters!

What do they look like?
Chipmunks have light brown fur, a striped back and a light underbelly. If you are close enough to count the stripes, you will find five dark brown stripes separated by four white stripes. Chipmunks also have stripes on their faces and around their eyes.

Where do they live?
Many chipmunks live in forests and woods, but some live at the edge of deserts and high up in the mountains. They all need to have hiding spaces and food. Chipmunks spend most of their time underground in their burrows. The soil will have to be easy to dig. Chipmunks mostly live in North America. The Western Chipmunk lives in Western USA, most of Canada and some parts in Mexico. The Eastern Chipmunk lives in Eastern USA and some parts of Canada.

What do they eat?
It depends on what they can find to eat. They mostly eat plants. In the summer, like now, chipmunks can choose their meal from a variety of foods. Their favorites are strawberries, blueberries, chokecherries, raspberries, wild grasses, pine seeds and PEANUTS! If food is hard to find, they will also eat wild mushrooms, roots of certain plants, bird eggs L and maybe a grasshopper, beetle or caterpillar. Sometimes they even eat flowers!

What are their children like?
Chipmunks usually have a litter of six pups, or chipmunk babies. They are born without hair and are deaf and blind. They weigh about three grams (That’s about 1 ounce divided by 10!). After ten days, they start growing downy fur and stripes. They cannot fully see or hear until the end of four weeks.

What are some interesting facts?
-You wouldn’t expect to see any chipmunks on a hot day. They will all be keeping cool in their burrows.
-Chipmunks scurry for shelter during a storm, just as people do.
-When chipmunks hibernate, it depends on how harsh the weather is. In Canada, they usually hibernate form October to April. Down South in the USA and Mexico, it will probably last a month or a few weeks.
-A chipmunk’s store of food for the winter is in its burrow. One chipmunks burrow was found to have 68,000 seeds in it!

Redo your room: Underwater Adventure

If your room has blue walls, this is the theme for you! If you don’t have blue walls, but love the ocean, this is also for you!

1. Start out by collecting pictures of sea stuff. You can also collect real things to do with the sea. For instance:

  • Pictures of sea creatures
  • Pictures of sunken ships like the Titanic
  • Shells
  • Sand
  • Fish toys
  • Pictures of coral reefs

2. Put the pictures onto your wall. If you have an empty table or dresser, put a jar of sand, shells, and fish toys on. Find some stickers too.

3. Make your bed blue. Ask your mom or dad if you can go shopping for a blue blanket and pillow. If you find an underwater themed one, get it!

4. If you have a small table with drawers that is white, have your parent’s permission and paint it! (Do not paint it in your room!) When you are done, you can put fish stickers on the drawer pulls.

CRAFTS FOR YOUR ROOM!

Ocean mobile
You will need:
Paper
Markers
String
An empty hanger
Hole puncher
Scissors
Heavy Duty Tape

What you do:
1. Create pictures of ocean things with your markers on the paper.
2. Cut them out and punch a hole in the top.
3. Loop string through it and tie it.
4. Then tie the other end of the string to the hanger. Do this with all of the pictures. If the string is different lengths for each picture, it will look cool.
5. Tie some string onto the top of the hanger and tape it onto your ceiling with heavy duty tape.
6. There it is!

Fish Appliqué

You will need:
Different colors of felt
Glue
Scissors
Permanent marker
Googly Eyes
smooth lamp shade

What you do:
1. Cut out shapes of felt with your scissors. (For instance, make a blue fish shape, then make orange fin shapes and make the lines with permanent marker. Glue on googly eyes and a red tail. Make a smile with a permanent marker. That is only an example. You can make the fish however you want!)
2. Make lots of them!
3. Then glue all the appliqués onto a lampshade. Let dry.
4. Now cute felt fish will brighten your room!

Shell Memories
You will need:
Shells, shells, shells!

A picture

What you do:
1.Take the empty photo frame and dab dots of superglue onto it. Make the number of dabs the number of shells you want on your frame.
2. Glue on the shells. Use any more superglue if needed.
3. Let dry for about 2 hours or whenever the glue is dry.
4. Insert the photo. Cool!
