Poems by Nazia A., 13, Minnesota

Islam
Islam is the sky
Islam is the grass
Islam is what makes me not lie
Islam stands tall through out a storm
Islam stands tall through the years I grow.
Islam inspired this poem.
Islam shaped this poem.
Islam shaped me.
Islam shaped you.

What’s Right?
Some of us are Christians, Muslims and Jews.
Some of us don’t believe in god, and that is ok too.
So there is no excuse to say you are wrong, and I am right.
Because we are equal, and that is what’s right.

Fatima's Journal by Shabnam M.

The Running Test

My mom gave me this journal. I don't know what to do with it. I'm not really good at writing at school. My mom says this will help my writing skills be better. I'm not really sure about that.

Okay. Let me talk about... what happened at school yesterday. Well, we had a spelling test. I got all of the words right. We learned about rocks in science. I like to do science experiments.

Oh yes. The most important thing. The running test. I fear the running test. I don't like to run. Running is not my favorite sport.

We went down to the city track, walking. It wasn't very far away from my school.

Hoooooooot! The whistle blowed. I started to jog. Many of the boys started off and were very far away in 10 seconds. I was jogging. That is what the teacher told us to do.

I ran past the finish line. 3 more laps to go. I had a very bad sideache. I needed water. I was very hot, too. My legs wanted to stop, but I wouldn't let them.

I went past the finish line. I finished lap two. I had a severe sideache. I jogged, but slowly. Ow, ow, ow, I thought to myself.

I went past the finish line to finish off lap three. Some kids were already done, drinking from their water bottles.

My legs ached. My feet burned. My sideache was so bad I couldn't run.

Then I saw it. The finish line.

I ran as fast as I could. I forgot the pain, forgot everybody, forgot the world. My goal was to reach the finish line.

Zoom! I was there, past the finish line. The gym teacher called out 10:15. So it took 10 minutes and 15 seconds. That was good for me! It was the least time I've ever gotten!

I knew I could do better, but I'm still proud of myself.

I really never gave up, did I?
