Story: Hafsa's Rescue by Shabnam M.

Hafsa was a little girl who lived on an island with her father and some people in a little village. Hafsa's dad had a farm that grew many vegetables. He also had 3 cows, some chickens, and two sheep.

Every Monday, Hafsa and her dad took their goods to the market on the big island. They used the Grand Bridge to get to the big island. They sold vegetables, milk, chicken, and fruit. Sometimes they sold eggs. When the harvest was not done, they would sell straw baskets, scarves, and wool blankets that Hafsa had made.

But now Hafsa's father was sick. Very sick. And it was Sunday evening. Almost Monday.

Hafsa was 8 years old, so she could not drive the pickup truck. Hafsa also saw in the newspaper that the Grand Bridge had a huge crack in the middle. So there was no use taking the old way, by horse and wagon.

Before it was darkening, Hafsa went to see if any boats were available. There was only a broken motorboat and a canoe with no paddles.

Hafsa would have to find out tomorrow.

* * *

Very early in the morning, Hafsa went to see if the two ferryboats were there. They weren't. Still the same two boats.

Hafsa was no mechanic, so she couldn't fix the broken boat. She had to return to the village. She asked the people in the village if they had canoe paddles. Only one person did, but the paddles needed a bit touching up.

Luckily the person was a woodworker. He fixed the paddles and gave them to Hafsa.

Hfsa packed the bag of vegetables. She was going to sell them, so she put them in the canoe.

She thought: I'm going to buy Dad medicine, insha-allah, and a doctor will come too.

When Hafsa was ready, she started rowing off into the morning.

The Color of Feelings

Feelings come in many colors
The colors of the rainbow
all have different feelings

Red is anger
The sensation to scream is inside you
Your fists are clenched at your sides...

Orange is hope
A wish curled up in your mind
Waiting to be granted...

Yellow is happiness
You cannot stop smiling
You just want to laugh and play...

Green is jealousy
You want to stay away from this feeling
Just don't think about what you have, but who you are

Blue is sadness
You want to cry
You feel no one will understand you, even though they will...

Indigo is shyness
You are shy around people
And you hide wherever you can...

Purple is confused
A mixture of all the feelings
You don't know what to say or do...

Pink is embarassed
You just did something you didn't want to do
And everyone is laughing...

Gray is grumpy
You are disturbed about something
And you have a bad attitude...

So many feelings can be expressed by colors
What color are you today?

The Magic Notebook by Shabnam M.

Before the Story…

Aisha and Omar entered Mr. Sulaiman’s store. The store was small, dusty and always very messy. Mr. Sulaiman had pointy ears and a long pointy nose. His glasses were as round as plates and they had no frames. He said he was Egyptian, but when Egyptian people came to his store, they always spoke to him in English, not Arabic. And Mr. Sulaiman seemed too pale to be Egyptian.

Aisha didn’t even know why she was in Mr. Sulaiman’s store, out of all places. Why wasn’t she in a Target store or a gas station? All she did know was that she needed a new drawing notebook and that her 9-year-old brother, Omar, was scared to death. She went to the school supplies section of the store. She took the first notebook in the notebook pile. The notebook was covered in something black and bumpy, like leather. The notebook had gold symbols on the cover. The first picture was an owl, then a bird, then a snake, then a feather, and finally a basket.

Aisha flipped it over to see if there was something that told what those pictures meant. But the back only had gold lettering that said CIGAM.

Aisha took it anyway. The paper inside seemed good for drawing. She went up to the cashier counter where Mr. Sulaiman was sitting, flipping through files fat with papers. He looked up. Those creepy eyes glared at Aisha, then at Omar. He took a look at the notebook and said, “You want that snakeskin notebook, do you?” in a voice like chalk scraping on chalkboard. Aisha gulped and nodded.

In no time, Aisha and Omar were running out of the small, spooky store lighted only by three lightbulbs, two windows, and candles. Outside it was nice, bright, and fresh smelling. The two siblings were glad to be out of there.

Aisha and Omar got on their bikes and headed home.

A few weeks later, during Spring Break

Aisha looked out the window and sighed. The rain had ruined all Aisha’s fun over Spring Break. She had been planning to go bike riding, go on a picnic with her friends, and spend almost the whole 11 days outside. But it was raining.

Aisha and Omar’s parents were at work, so Grandma was babysitting them. Grandma was downstairs in the living room reading the Qur’an. Aisha and Omar were in Aisha’s room, thinking about what to do.

“I know!” Aisha said excitedly. “Let’s draw!” She got out the notebook she got from Mr. Sulaiman’s store and she took out an animal drawing book.

First Aisha drew an owl. Aisha was proud of her picture. The book showed her how to draw all the little details of the owl, even the ruffles of the feathers. The owl almost looked real.

“Zuhur time!” Grandma called up the stairs. The two kids did their wudu and went downstairs.

While they were praying, Aisha heard a sound. “Hoot! Hoot! Hoot!” What is that? She thought. Then she realized that she should be focusing on Allah, not the sound.

After Zuhur, Omar asked , “What was that sound?”

“What sound?” Grandma asked.

“The hooting sound!” said Aisha.

“There was no hooting sound, you two. You are probably just imagining.”

Aisha and Omar raced up to Aisha’s room. On her desk was a brown owl that looked exactly like the owl that Aisha drew before prayer! Aisha saw that the page she drew on in the notebook was empty.

“Wow” they whispered together. They watched the owl fly around the room.

“Did he come out of the page?” Omar whispered.

“I think so” Aisha whispered back.

“It’s looking for something.”

“Yeah, but what is it looking for?”

“I dunno.”

“Is it friendly? Does it bite?”

“It looks nice.”

“I know! It needs a forest to live in. It needs a nest!” Aisha said.

Aisha grabbed the notebook and drew trees, grass, flowers, and everything to make a woodland. She also drew a comfortable nest. The picture slowly faded away.

Suddenly Aisha’s room became a forest. “Whoa!” Omar shouted. The owl was perching on a branch.

Aisha then became excited. She drew a cat, a dog, a family of birds, a rabbit, a squirrel, a chipmunk, and a small horse. She drew a family of ducks floating in a pond. A puddle appeared in the middle of the room.

The siblings were having so much fun! They played with the animals. Right then, Aisha wanted to become a vet and Omar wanted to become a zoologist. The animals were so tame. Aisha rode on a horse for the first time in her life! The siblings drew food so the animals could eat.

Aisha and Omar heard footsteps. Grandma! “Oh no!” wailed Omar. “She’s going to see everything, then take it all away to a zoo or something!”

Aisha gulped. She was having so much fun that she didn’t think about how everything would go back to normal.

Grandma opened the door. The siblings froze.

Grandma said, “I want you two to take a nap for an hour. After that we will watch a movie.” Grandma went over to the notebook. She flipped through the pages.

“These are good pictures you drew” Grandma said. Aisha and Omar exchanged glances. There were no pictures in the notebook. All the pages were blank. All the pictures became an animal, habitat or food.

Grandma left. Aisha closed the door.

“She didn’t see anything! I think that adults can’t see anything that comes out of this mysterious notebook. Awesome! We can make a zoo!”

“But kids can still see the animals” said Omar.

Aisha nodded. “But how do we get the stuff back into the notebook?” Aisha picked up the notebook and closed it.

A whoosh of color came through and went directly into the notebook. Now Aisha’s room was normal again.

“So we just have to close the notebook!” Aisha said with amazement.

“Let’s draw a T-rex!” said Omar.

“Sure” said Aisha.

Aisha started drawing the leg, then she stopped. “I don’t think we should do this…” she started.

But the leg was starting to grow and grow and grow. “GET THE ERASER! QUICK!” Aisha screamed.

Omar ran frantically around the room, trying to find an eraser. “I don’t know where it is!” he cried.

The other body parts of the dinosaur were coming onto the picture.

Aisha shouted, “It’s in the first drawer on the right side of the desk. Quick!”

Omar ran to the left side of the desk and opened the first drawer, searching around.

“No!” Aisha shouted. “Not on the left side! The right side!”

Omar scurried over to the right side. The dinosaur was growing. The head was appearing!

“Found it!” Omar shouted, with the eraser in hand. He gave the eraser to Aisha.

Aisha rubbed as hard as she could. She thought the paper would rip, but it didn’t. Finally there was no more dinosaur.

“Phew!” Aisha sighed, wiping her forehead.

Grandma came into the room. “Aren’t you supposed the be sleeping?” she asked.

“Well, um” Aisha started.

Grandma laughed. “If you’re not tired, come downstairs with me. Let’s start that movie.”

The three of them walked downstairs together.
